6th Grade Science - This year you will be previewing Life, Physical and Earth Science.  You will enjoy hands-on activities, labs, movies and power point instruction in the classroom.  Unit objectives and study guides will be given with each new unit of study.

7th Grade Science - This year you will be studying Life Science.  We will begin the year with the basic unit of life - the cell - and work through all of the different kingdoms.  Unit objectives and study guides will be given with each new unit of study.  Each quarter you will be assigned a relevant topic to research and report on that will be a due a week before the quarter's end (Extended Reading).  Most 7th graders look forward to dissecting a frog in the spring!

8th Grade Science - This year will be very exciting for the 8th graders.  We have a new Physical Science textbook that contains a lab for each lesson.  This means there will be a lot of hands-on work that relates to the concept we are learning.  Assessments with be very different.  They will allow the student to apply what they have learned in the chapter to a real-life project/activity.  Extended readings will still be required each quarter to allow for further learning about relevant topics.

Daily Routine - It is very important that the student be prepared for each day of class.  This would include having a writing instrument and binder with paper ready for class.  The 8th graders should always have a calculator also.  Assignments will be returned and should be placed in the binder until the end of each unit.  It would be important for them to have all of their assignments and notes as they prepare for the unit assessment.  Textbooks will remain in the classroom this year and be used mostly as a reference for the student.

On the Web - Weekly I will update what we will be doing each of day of class on my classroom page at www.firstimmanuel.com if you would like to stay informed about what we are doing.

Assessments/Tests - will vary in type and be given at the end of each unit of study.  I will put the student's current grade for the course in top right hand corner of the assessment if you would like to know how they are doing.

Mr. Schaubs’ Weekly Note

Dear Christian Parents,

Well, here we are at the end of another school year.  In all my years of teaching I’ve never had two classes that were alike, and this year certainly was no exception.  At the end of many years, I would tend to feel a bit melancholy, missing my kids before they even leave.  But this year I’m rather excited, not because I’ll be glad to see this class leave, but because of all the opportunity opening up to us for next year.  Believe it or not, around here the teachers have been talking more about the beginning of school in fall, than the end of school this week.

Next year I will once again be teaching science to your children as fifth graders.  Our mini-middle school approach to departmentalization not only better prepares your children for their middle school years, it also allows the teachers to prepare more thorough lessons with a better eye on their specific curricular area as it is extended through the grades.

So, goodbye for now, have a great summer, and thank you so very much for allowing me to have been one of your children’s teachers for the past school year.  I’ll miss each and every one of them, and will send them occasional emails throughout the summer keeping them updated as to their chickens’ progress.  Encourage them to write back to me and tell me how their summer is going.  It never hurts for them to practice those writing skills.

May God continue to bless our family this summer!  Mr. Schaubs
