Each morning I stand by the door and greet each student as he or she walks into the classroom. I open my door early and there is always a line of students waiting to get in. Every child greets me with a handshake, a hug, or other salutation, and they each have a brief opportunity to tell me how they have been doing since they left the classroom the previous day.
Also, because I believe that the child comes first, I always try to have one-on-one student/teacher conferences as well as parent/teacher conferences. I believe that this places the responsibility of a child’s behavior and academic performance in the hands of the individual who has the greatest opportunity and potential to change or improve that performance. That individual is, of course, the child him or herself.
