It has been said, "A person is as good as his word." This sermon reflection examines this simple truth. According to the Book of Revelation, anyone whose name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life will be entering into God's presence. Do you believe God is as good as His Word? If so, how does your guaranteed place in eternity affect your days? Before you think through that last question too quickly, remember this. Kings will be next to you in eternity. Revelation 21:27 also tells us that nothing impure will ever enter eternity. If that is true, and God is as good as His Word, what is happening in this earthly existence to our impurities? How does the cross fit in to what is currently happening with us? What characteristics of your life will make it into eternity? What parts of you will never see God face to face? How do you know for certain that your name has been called by God, so your name is in the book of eternal Life?

Matthew writes, “When (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36). In what ways do you feel harassed and helpless in your daily life? Paul writes, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). How does God’s promise to use everything for good help you in trying times, even when you cannot see the good? When did you experience the compassion of Christ in the midst of a most trying time? How did that help you cope with your challenge? How did the compassion of Christ strengthen your faith and trust in Him? We who daily experience the compassion of Jesus who is with us always are called to share what we receive. Do you know someone who is “harassed and helpless” as they are confronted by one of life’s many hardships? How can you share with them the compassion of Jesus?

Think of a “tomb” in your life, what is preventing you from leaving it? Do you feel the presence of Jesus when you’re in life’s darkness? If not, how could you begin to recognize His presence? In John 11, how does Jesus express His love for individuals? How does Jesus express His love for you? Where do you feel the most alive with God? How can you cultivate this calling of God in your life? If you lived deeper in God’s love, how might His power help you live your life to God’s calling?

The phrase, son of Abraham was used in regard to Zacchaeus. Jesus included him in that family linage. It could mean one of three things. First, that he was a blood relative of Abraham. Or, he could be a descendent of Abraham’s family by means of a faith like Father Abraham had. Or, the third option is that he was both a blood relative of Abraham, and had a faith that put his hope in God, just like Abraham did. Are you a child of Abraham? If so, in what way? Is your linage something that motivates you? It sure did motivate Zaccheaus. Zacchaeus was completely surprised when he got to see who Jesus really was. He was completely transformed by the faith he received from Him. As you reflect on your personal history, what transformations has Jesus brought about through your seeing who He is? Zacchaeus’ transformed life brought benefits to others, who had to deal with him on a daily basis. He paid back anyone that he cheated. What personal transactions have taken place between you and the people around you that give evidence of the new life that you have in Jesus? We do not know for sure, but there is no evidence that Zacchaeus quit his known vocation of being a tax collector. But it can at least be implied that his ethical standards for doing business were greatly modified. What ethical standards do you use to guide you in your business affairs? Are they different than those that the unbelieving world would use? If so, what are those differences?

Ever since Adam and Eve’s fall into sin people have struggled with pride. In what ways does pride seem to surface in your life? Saul, later called Paul, began his career by persecuting Christians. He was actually proud of his ability to disturb the mission of the Church. How does our arrogance and prideful attitudes actually harm the mission of the Church in our homes and in our church? When Jesus called St. Paul, He reminded him that whatever he was doing to Christians he was doing to Jesus Himself. How would our relationships be different if we kept in mind that whatever we do to others we are actually doing to Jesus? Jesus calls us out of our selfish attitudes and into a life of love and care and service. How will your life be different this week as you “get out of yourself” and get into a life of service? Saul became the Apostle Paul, one of the greatest missionaries of all time. Paul understood that to be called by Christ is to be called into the mission fields. Paul traveled the world to share the Good News of Jesus, but you don’t have to go very far to find someone who needs the hope that only Jesus can bring. Who needs your Christian care and friendship? How will you share Jesus with them?

Mary went to the tomb of Jesus early in the morning, while it was still dark. Are there dark places in your life that cause loneliness, pain, sorrow? How has the darkness affected your life and relationships? How does Easter give you hope for each new day? John didn’t step into the empty tomb. Perhaps he was a bit taken back by walking into that tomb alone. Have you ever felt alone in life? How does the resurrected and living Jesus give you hope for each new day? Peter knew that Jesus died on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday he entered Jesus’ empty tomb and, seeing the discarded graves linens, he knows Jesus is alive! Have you ever been frightened or angered by death? How does Jesus’ resurrection give you hope for eternal life? What difference does the resurrection of Jesus make in your life today and eternally?

Do you most often follow God’s wisdom or the world’s wisdom? How does this affect your relationship with God? Scripture says, “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” Most recently, what wisdom or strength did you depend upon, that only made you foolish or weak? When have you seen in your foolishness or weakness the power of God making you wise or strong? Often our pride and living our lives through the world’s wisdom destroys or breaks our relationships. How has God’s action of love brought you comfort and peace? When has His love shown you your value in His eyes? Often we feel like we can’t be loved. In the past couple weeks what has appeared to be your biggest problem? How did you respond to it? Did you perceive it as a hindrance or a opportunity? The disciples wanted to send the hungry people away. How do you deal with problems/conflicts? Do you face them head on, take time before addressing it, or avoid the situation all together? Are problems your opportunity or your struggle? Jesus’ always took problems for Him and others and made them opportunities for God’s love & grace to shine. What are the problems you are facing today? How is God involved in them?
Throughout Jesus’ ministry he performed miracles. When or what time in your life have you seen a miracle by God? What problem was the root of the miracle? How will God be able to make your problems today become miracles for tomorrow? For this month start to journal your problems as opportunities and make note where you see God making miracles out of your problems.

Why is it hard to add “Thy will be done” to the end of our prayers? How does praying “Thy will be done” assist us in receiving God’s answer to our prayer? Do we really deserve or earn what God gives to us? Does God really depend upon us for anything? The grace of God is the reason our prayers are answered perfectly. How is this a motivation for us to pray? We tend to focus so much on the answer to our prayer. Why is it more important that we focus on the One who answer the prayer rather than the answer?

Reflect on a time when an answer to your prayer was obvious? Did God answer you exactly what you prayed for? Do you think God’s hand was evident in the answer? On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being weak and 5 being strong, where is your prayer life? What keeps your prayer life from being deeper? Given that we often turn to the Lord in times of trouble, how easy is it to pray for God’s will to be done rather than yours? How can you be more conscious about praying for God’s will? Set aside time each day this week to pray about these things:
• Persecuted Christians around the world
• Guidance and Wisdom for our nation’s leaders
• The mission of First Immanuel
• For God to help you in your prayer life throughout this month
