clip_image002Nearly every river begins with a single trickle of water somewhere in the higher elevations. It may emerge from a mountain spring, or perhaps a snowfield that never fully melts. But somewhere, somehow, a tiny creek appears and begins its journey to the sea. Along the way, other creeks enter the first one as tributaries, adding volume and nutrients.

Before long, the creek becomes a brook, and the brook a stream, and then, at some undefined moment, it becomes a river, a mighty river, perhaps as big as the Columbia or Missouri.

On July 25, 2000, First Immanuel Lutheran Church established its first endowment fund. It was like a creek at the headwaters of what has now become a flowing source of financial resources. Like tributaries streaming in from other beginnings, additional endowments have been added along the way.

Today, our endowment program includes four separate endowments that have combined to become a river. This river runs right through First Immanuel Lutheran Church, providing financial nourishment to our programs and operations. The larger the river grows, the more we can accomplish. Like river water can turn desert ground into green pastures, so a growing flow of endowment resources can create new fields of fruitful productivity.

How would you like to become a “tributary” by creating an endowment fund that flows into our river of financial supply? It is easier than you might think.

Every year, we receive news of new "sunrises" created by the thoughtful planning of our older donors who include First Immanuel Lutheran Ministries in their wills. These bequests appear on the horizon as beautiful expressions of a new day for FIL.

For example, consider the donor who made arrangements in her will to create an endowment fund at her death. As soon as the funding reached First Immanuel Lutheran, we placed the contribution in our endowment in memory of this forward-thinking woman.

An endowment fund is a special fund that provides a "payout" every year to support the purposes of the endowment. The corpus of the endowment is kept intact and only the interest, or a portion thereof, is available for use.

An endowment, like an artesian well, never runs dry. Each year it provides a financial gift to FIL.

Endowment funds may be created during a person's life, or at death through a will bequest. Some donors combine the two, creating one now and then adding to it with a bequest.

Endowments are indeed like sunlight to First Immanuel Lutheran. They provide the warm and comforting knowledge that financial resources will be available for generations to come. This provides light for planners who peer into the future, knowing that they can count on this particular source of financial support.

Would you like to paint a sunrise at the sunset time of your life? It is as simple as including the correct language in your will. For information about the First Immanuel Endowment Funds, including sample bequest language, contact Lori Newhouse in our Development Office at 262-377-6610.
