Coming in April

Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible

This four week Bible study will feature Dr. Nathan Jastram, Dead Sea Scrolls scholar and head of the Theology Department at Concordia University Wisconsin. Each week embodies the importance of how God’s word affects our lives.

April 11 Introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls
This session will offer background information on the Dead Sea Scrolls, including the land in which they were discovered, the story of their discovery, and the site of Qumran.

April 18 Methods of Studying the Dead Sea Scrolls
This session will cover the physical characteristics of the Dead Sea Scrolls, how the Scrolls have been preserved, and how they are reconstructed. Various imaging techniques and ways of analyzing the Scrolls will be explained.

April 25 Textual Criticism and the Dead Sea Scrolls
This session will illustrate how scholars make judgments about which reading is more likely to be original when various manuscripts contain various readings.

May 2 The Dead Sea Scrolls and Christianity
This session will compare the teachings in the Dead Sea Scrolls to the teachings of the Christian church. Were some early Christians members of the Qumranites? Did they share similar ideas about Scripture? Did early Christians organize themselves as a society in ways that are similar to the Qumranites? Did they share similar ideas about the sacraments, or about the Messiah?
